It’s not easy to apply for a position as a volunteer traveler. You need an appealing resume to stand out from the large number of applicants. Last year, Li Cheng, a college student, sent 10 resumes before she got one reply from a hotel in Xiamen. In fact, most hotels require that applicants speak standard Mandarin, in addition to being outgoing. Cooking and English skills are optional, but having them will undoubtedly give you an upper hand.

Even though Li had little choice in her destination, her one-month stay in Xiamen was still an unforgettable experience. Li said that volunteer travel is all about slowing down to get to know the people and places in a city.
