MydaughterEvieandIwereheadinghomefromshoppingonSaturday...

My daughter Evie and I were heading home from shopping on Saturday. Driving up Broadway near the middle of town, I caught sight of a little dog wandering on the sidewalk, hanging his head low. “Mom, pull over,” Evie said. “That dog is lost!”

I slowed to a stop and we got out. The little dog was wearing a collar with a dog tag(*牌), no owner in sight. “Here,” Evie said, “ We’ll help you get home.” She talked to him warmly, so as not to send him running into the street. When she’d earned his trust and he was convinced she was friendly, she carried him in her arms, as if she’d known him forever. I read the dog tag, But they were too small for me to read. Evie came to help. “Here’s his home number,” she said. “I ‘ll read it out, and you call.” But I’d left my phone in the car. Evie, being 12, had hers in her back pocket. She handed it over.

“ We have your dog,” I said to the man who answered. The man sounded as if someone had kidnapped (*) his son for money. “I mean, my daughter and I saw him walking on Broadway, right across from restaurant.”

“ He got out? When?” The man said as if he’d lost his baby.

“Don’t worry, we have him right here now.”

Within minutes the man came. He lived not far away and thought his little dog had got out when someone opened the front door. Evie handed the dog over with a kiss on his head. “I told him he can’t just walk to the restaurant whenever he feels like it,” the man said. Evie and I laughed and said goodbye. On the way to the car, I put my arm around my young daughter praising her for what she had done.
