Over the years, the image I had of my father was formed from all the stories I had heard. He was 27 when he died. I was only a few months old. A single photograph of me in his arms is the only evidence I have that we ever met.

When I was young, there was a children’s book called The Happy Family. Its image of the family was typical(典型的)of the time. Dad worked all day long at the office, Mom baked in the kitchen, and brother and sister always had friends sleeping over(再别人家里过夜). The family in the book looked nothing like my family, But, luckily, in the way my Aunt Marion read it to me, the story became highly entertaining.

My aunt was the one who played baseball with me and went horseback riding with me. She helped me find my first job and asked her male friends at work to take me to the father-son dinners that marked the end of every sports seasons. When the time came, she convinced the elderly man next door to teach me how to shave(刮胡子) I was 15, she gave me lessons on how to drive.

Aunt Marion never got married. This meant that she was free to spend her spare time taking care of me.

But being Aunt Marion, she didn’t and still doesn’t give herself much praise. Unless forced to stand in front in family photos, she’s always in the background, and she doesn’t think her efforts have made a difference. So every June for the past 40 years, with growing gratitude to my Aunt Marion, I’ve sent her a Father’s Day card.
