   Myfatheralwayshadareadysmileandakindword.WhenIwaslit...

My father always had a ready smile and a kind word. When I was little, he’d take me fishing or to the park. We were close then, and I wanted to grow up to be just like Dad. Then things began to change. I could never find time to do stuff(事情)with him any more. We used to argue a lot and I know it was me who usually started it.

Dad tried to talk to me, but it was hard on both of us. I was embarrassed (感到难堪)by him-he had never learned to read and dropped out of school to take a job in a car repair shop.

Then he started to behave strangely. He’d stay up late at night, and when I saw him the next morning there would be dark circles under his eyes. One night I found out why.

It was cold so I decided to get another blanket to warm up my bed. The kitchen light was still on and I went to turn it off. Looking around the corner, I saw my father at the kitchen table, with a book in front of him and a pen in his hand. He was talking slowly and quietly. After a while I recognized the words as Dr Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat”.

I bought the book when I was little and had asked my father to read it to me. I remember how his face turned red as he handed it back to me and said, “Sorry, son. ”Now, as I heard the familiar words coming from his lips, I was stunned(惊呆了).

I never mentioned my discovery but I began to have more respect for my father. I often asked him for advice and spent more time with him.

One summer day, I came home to find a new car in our garage. “Hope you like it, ”my father said.

The three words were on the tip of my tongue, but I still could not tell him that I loved him.
