 ThomasEdison'sincandescent(白熾的)light-bulbwillhavebeenb...

Thomas Edison's incandescent(白熾的) light-Bulb will have been brought to an end by

2016 because it uses too much energy. The "great light hope" to replace it is a bulb made

from light-emitting diodes(兩級管), or LEDs. More efficient even than its green competitor,

the compact fluorescent bulb(小型熒光燈), LEDs can last about 20 years. But if you take into

account how much energy is needed to produce them, are LEDs still a sustainable choice?

Mary Ashe, a graduate engineering student who's working on a research project that's

assessing the life cycle of LEDs, asked.

A sustainability sensibility(感受*) is sweeping through and transforming the curricula

(課程) in America's colleges of engineering, with more and more educators stressing the

importance of designs and solutions that rely on renewable resources.

David T. Allen, a chemical-engineering professor, says sustainable engineering is

"very much in the growth mode". Its goal is to use resources in such a way that current

needs are met without robbing future generations of the ability to use them as well.

"Students have asked us to deliver more courses in this area," says Allen. The push is

coming from "students who want to engage in what I call ‘engineering that you can feel good

about'," he adds. "You have to go back several generations to find another group of students

interested in doing something good for society."

Jeremy Guest, 27, didn't get bitten by the green-design bug(臭蟲) until his third year in

grad school, when he took a course in sustainability.  "It opened my eyes," he says. Now,

Guest is researching how to recover drinkable water, nutrients, and energy from waste water.

28. The question asked by Ashe in the first paragraph is used to

    A. show that she's puzzled by LEDs

     B. encourage readers to think about it

     C. introduce the topic of sustainable engineering

    D. show how difficult such a choice can be

29. It can be inferred from what Allen says in Paragraph 3 that

    A. students study engineering for pleasure

    B. sustainable engineering was once unpopular

    C. students find sustainable engineering difficult

    D. students used to be less concerned about social benefits

30. The underlined part "get bitten by the green-design bug" in the text means “          "

    A. become interested in green design

     B. begin to like green bugs

    C. suffer attacks from green insects

      D. fail in green design

31. What is conveyed in the text?

     A. Current courses satisfy students' interest in sustainability.

     B. Students are forced to show a passion for environmental problems.

     C. Sustainable engineering is becoming a trend.

     D. Sustainability is a hot topic among students.
