Bodylanguagehasbeenusedforthousandsofyears.Somescientis...

Body language has been used for thousands of years. Some scientists, especially those who believe in the evolution, understand body language to have been the initial communication method in the early man. This is yet to be proven and it is quite possible. However, it is imperative to understand that different kinds of body language vary in their use from one culture to another.

It is very important that you understand the meanings of different kinds of body language in different communities before using them. For example, some years back, the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, visited a foreign country in which he knew nothing regarding their culture. When he arrived in the presidential jet and got outside, having nothing to say as he never understood their language, he stood in the doorway then with a broad smile on his face and did the “peace” body sign of two fingers in the air. The crowd started shouting and it was later learnt that the two fingers, which we perceive as a symbol of peace, were an offensive sign to the locals of that country.

Another common cultural difference in body language is the “thumbs up”. In Northern America for example, this sign means that everything is going on fine or “I need a ride” if made in a highway. On the other hand, with the Greeks as an example, a “thumbs up”, especially when done with a rapid upward and slow downward motion means “up yours”.

It is very important that you know your target audience if you plan on traveling to foreign countries. This will help avoid insulting them by understanding body language meaning of your culture to them or from them to you. This will save you a lot from both frustrations and punishment.
